Description : What happens when an innocent prank goes horribly wrong?
Natasha, Riya, Anjali and Katherine were best friends in college – each different from the other yet inseparable – until that night.
It was the night that began with a bottle of whisky and a game of Ouija but ended with the death of Sania, their unlikeable hostel mate. The friends vowed never to discuss that fateful night, a pact that had kept their friendship and guilt dormant for the last twenty years.
But now, someone has begun to mess with them, threatening to reveal the truth that only Sania knew. Is it a hacker playing on their guilt or has Sania’s ghost really returned to avenge her death?
As the faceless enemy closes in on them, the friends come together once again to recount what really happened that night. But when the story is retold by each of them, the pieces don’t fit. Because none of them is telling the whole truth . . .
That Night is a dark, twisted tale of friendship and betrayal that draws you in and confounds you at every turn.
My Review :
That Night by Nidhi Upadhyay is a darkly haunting and compelling tale of friendship, deception, secrets and revenge. It follows four girls Anjali, Riya, Natasha and Katherine whose lives changes on one fateful night which kicks off with an innocuous prank of Ouija game and ending with the death of Sania. Whatever happened that night was vowed to be never ever divulge again by the quartet. However, after twenty years something or someone has begun to unravel their buried past, stirring their long established cemented lies into motion.
Secrets have a tendency to hold the bearer a hostage of constant fear. Same thing happens to these four and this time, they are not privileged of choosing to show the partial truth. A mysterious assailant has begin to terrorize the secret keepers and won’t stop until they come face to face with their demons.
Who was this person? Was it a devious work of a cyber bully or has the ghost of Sania finally come back from the dead seeking nothing but the truth?
I devoured “That Night.” It was brilliantly twisty, spellbinding and suspenseful. What I loved about the plot is you don’t get all the facts at once but as you delve deeper, they become more stronger and at times intuitive but at the same time the mystery element is something that has been liberally explored and I was immediately drawn into this intense, atmospheric thriller as there were so many unexpected revelations that kept me reading into the night. Told in alternative sections of Anjali’s, Katherine’s, Natasha’s and Riya’s voices, it further intensified into an remarkable and neat plot development. There were a lot of other dynamics that were in play along with main theme such as family issues, personal dilemmas and more, making it all the more interesting.
Readers who enjoy gripping and visceral portrait of a deeply satisfying plot are in for a real treat. I am not going to lie, i was absolutely addicted with this. Riveting characters who although belonged to the same clique, carried different personalities altogether. Each one of them had a distinctive voice and fine tuning it with chilling details made this book stand out, every time there was a tiny detail revealed to us, it rotated and gave way to an avalanche of theories.
Buckle up for an utterly magnificent and edge of your seat thriller of 2021.
